WHAT IS OAKGROVE HOPE?
Oakgrove Hope is the name of this website that is currently dedicated to raising funds to help Northwest Baptist Church buy a building on Grove Place in Derry City centre. The city of Derry traces its roots all the way back to when it was only an oak grove. The word Derry or Doire in Irish means ‘oak grove.’ And the church that will meet in the building has the goal of providing hope to the people of Derry through sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF NORTHWEST BAPTIST?
Northwest Baptist began in 2006 as a church plant out of Vision Baptist Church in Alpharetta, Georgia, USA. The original church planters were Travis and Teri Snode, who were succeeded by Sam Quinn and now Pastor James (‘Jimmy’) Wilson. The church has met in various different locations on the Waterside and Cityside, but has always had a heart for people from all backgrounds, particularly those on the Cityside.
WHAT IS THE NORTHWEST BAPTIST LIKE?
The church is a small group of believers from various backgrounds but with a common faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. They have a desire to obey the commands of Christ, to proclaim the gospel, and to give hope to the people of Derry. They are led by Pastor James Wilson who is originally from County Donegal.
WHY PURCHASE A BUILDING?
A church is not a building, but a building can be a great tool for worship, discipleship, and outreach. Owning a building will enable the believers to have a more permanent and effective base from which to reach out into the community. It will also enable the church to be totally self-sustaining and self-supporting.
WHO WILL OWN THE BUILDING?
The building will be purchased in the name of Northwest Baptist Church. The church is governed by a trust deed and bylaws and is registered with The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, number NIC101124.
WHAT IS THE BUILDING LIKE?
The building is a three-level house that will be converted into meetings rooms, office, and Christian worker’s flat. It has an open plan ground floor which will allow for small group meetings. Some renovation work will need to be carried out on the property, but all funds for renovations are factored into the total cost.
HOW MUCH MONEY ARE YOU TRYING TO RAISE?
In the first phase of fund-raising, we received donations totaling $66,380! This final phase of fund-raising will require an additional $50,000 which will cover the rest of the cost of the property, survey costs, legal fees, and some renovations.
